Flying on Swartfontein

  • Location: The landing strips on Swartfontein are situated on the plateau of the Rant Mountains south of road D1275 to Spreetshoogte Pass, and lie higher than 1900 m. This makes them the highest landing strips in Namibia. The two landing strips on Swartfontein are not connected to each other.
    Note altitude/density!
There are no power lines crossing the farm.
  • Recommended approach: Weather and length of landing strip permitting, make use of 03/21, because then the airplane can be parked directly next to the farmhouse.

Run-up Pad: at the start of the landing strip 03
Be cautious when the east wind blows: Crosswinds and strong turbulences on 03/21 are possible, then rather make use of 13/31.

  • Windsocks: At the start of the 03 on the right side, on the 31 after the first third on the left side where there is also a parking bay.
Caution: Wind charger [turbine] directly at farm building. Height ± 12 m
  • Day trips: From Swartfontein one can easily reach the majestic dunes of Sossusvlei or fly over the Kuiseb where the red sand dunes cascade into the dark river.
The Gamsberg Plateau and the Naukluft Mountains with spectacular scenery are nearby.
If you would like a coffee and apple crumble, you will find it in nearby Solitaire.
Here you will be able to get normal fuel, but no avgas.
And thereafter you take off again and cross the majestic Rant Mountains to Swartfontein.
